Graduate Showcase | Peter Engelsen
MSc Public Policy; 1st Class, University of Nottingham
"I saw a programme that would give me the freedom to explore a range of different interests and the support mechanisms in place to provide the perfect environment in which to begin my professional career... My transition from life as a postgraduate in Nottingham into the world of consultancy has been aided by the friendliness and support of my new colleagues"
In this Graduate Showcase, Peter Engelsen has shared with us his experience as a member of the first Socitm Advisory graduate cohort. The Socitm Advisory Programme enabled graduates to participate in a number of rotations while working as a Junior Consultant within a client project team.
Having completed my first rotation on the Future Consultant Programme here at Socitm Advisory, this piece provides me with the opportunity to share my experiences, and encourage others to join a graduate programme that is tailored to the graduate, providing autonomy on the path they wish to take.
Tell us a little about your education...
I graduated from the University of Brighton with a First Class (Hons) in Politics and Social Policy. I then went on to complete my MA in Public Policy in September 2019 at the University of Nottingham, where I graduated with a Distinction.
How did you find out about the Socitm Advisory Future Consultant Programme and why did you apply?
When I was looking for work in September there were no opportunities that genuinely piqued my interest more than the graduate programme that Socitm Advisory advertised online. I saw a programme that would give me the freedom to explore a range of different interests and the support mechanisms in place to provide the perfect environment in which to begin my professional career.
How did you find the application process for the Future Consultant Programme?
After filling out an online application I was invited to speak to one of the team over the phone. I was able to discuss my application and ask questions around the rest of the process. I then joined Socitm Avisory's COO, Matt Gascogine, for a face-to-face discussion. Not only did this give Matt an opportunity to ask me questions about myself, but it also allowed me to gain an insight into the forward-thinking and ambitious culture that exists throughout Socitm Advisory. Subsequent conversations with other consultants reaffirmed this for me and, as the process developed, I began to see just how brilliant an opportunity this was.
How have you found your time at Socitm Advisory?
My transition from life as a postgraduate student in Nottingham into the world of consultancy has been aided by the friendliness and support of my new colleagues, and I would like to thank them all from their warm welcome. It is very clear that each of them brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in public sector transformation and I am excited about this unique opportunity to learn from so many talented individuals.
What have you already been doing as part of the Future Consultant Programme?
I have been actively working on a project with the Royal Borough of Greenwich where Socitm Advisory are assisting in a review of the case management system, which is used in the provision of health and social care. I have been able to undertake work that has made a meaningful impact on the progression of the project, and it is great to be so involved in this project.

Alongside Greenwich, I have had the chance to get involved in a whole range of activities. From learning about software testing, to helping organise a workshop on the future of artificial intelligence in health and social care. Socitm Advisory has already allowed me to develop my skills and to discover new skills I didn't know I had.
As you continue in your rotations what are you most looking forward to?
I am excited to see where the graduate programme will take me. I feel very grateful for the opportunity to join Socitm Advisory at such a momentus time in the preparations for the future.
I would say to any future graduates considering applying for this programme: make sure you ask plenty of questions, be yourself, and good luck!
